The 38th instalment of the Kaldor Public Art Projects , "Thomas Demand: The Object Lesson", involved building an exhibition structure inside the Art Gallery of NSW that was suspended above the ground. AGNSW engaged Wild Sets in collaboration with WINSTON to realise this ambitious project.
Challenge
The project involved two layers of artwork - a selection of pieces from the John Kaldor Family Collection, and the structure that was designed to display them. The challenge involved interpreting the conceptual drawings of German artist, Thomas Demand, and realising them inside the gallery in Sydney - which, for an entirely suspended structure, was no easy feat.
Solution
Our intricate process included creating a 3D map of the gallery ceiling, building a 3D model and fabricating bespoke laminated timber to fit the exacting specifications of the design. The result is a truly beautiful work, that celebrates the meticulous detail of its constructed surfaces. We were thrilled to collaborate with Wild Sets on this project and work with the team at AGNSW and Kaldor Public Art Projects.
